October: 4th deadliest month since war began

by Shavonna Raso

Last month there was a total of 101 Americans killed over in Iraq, making it the 4th deadliest month since the war began. Before that, the monthly tolls were 107 in the month of January 2005, 135 in April 2004, and 137 in November 2004. As you can see, since the conflict began in March 2003 there has been a slight variation in death tolls.

A random survey of the Red Rock students says that more than 3/4 of them want our troops to come home. There was a comment stating, "It’s not our war to fight." It promoted lots of discussion and brought lots of opinions. For some people this subject really hit close to home. "Having my son-in-law over there is hard. It proves just how real this thing actually is. Those vicious people are controlling all the helpless ones. It made it even harder knowing we lost a friend to the April death toll. But knowing that we are over there giving up so much of us to help this nation grow to be independent is amazing.", stated Nanci S. a member of the coral unit staff.

EDITORIAL

by Sarah Rovner

Dear STAFF/ADMINISTRATION,

We would all like to see our units have more co-ed activities where both the boys an girls can participate together to help the students of Red Rock strengthen their social skills with the opposite sex. Some activities that our peers have proposed are perhaps co-ed enrichments, such as art and AA/NA groups. Many students would also like to have more outside time with the different units combined, and play sports together such as volleyball and basketball. Students agree that the lack of contact with the opposite sex has created isolation within their units and creates an even greater atmosphere for note-passing and unapproved communication. Students who can maintain appropriate boundaries say that it would be a good idea to mix the groups to help decrease that problem. Not only the students agree with the idea of girls and boys participating in activities together, but the staff of RRCS would also like to see this step toward integrating the campus socially. The students of RRCS would really appreciate it if co-ed activities could become a part of their stay at RRCS treatment program. THANK YOU!

St. Louis named most dangerous city

by Andrew Singler

With good, comes bad. Just two days after St. Louis won the world series they were ranked the most dangerous city in the United States. Violent crime surged nearly 20% since 2004. "It’s just sad the way the city is," resident Sam Dawson explains, "on the news you hear of killings and that someone has been shot". It came as no surprise to the residents of St. Louis since the city has been on the top 10 list for years. The historical Arc, one a symbol of historical pride, now represents the ups and downs of the dismal rollercoaster of St. Louis.
